Start with where the matter may belong
The nearest office is not always the only relevant consideration. Ask where the incident occurred, where defendants are located, which state’s law may apply, and which courts could have jurisdiction and venue.
Verify the individual lawyer
Use the official state licensing authority to check status and public discipline information. A firm profile is not a substitute for confirming who would be responsible for the matter.
Ask experience questions precisely
Ask whether the lawyer has handled the same type of incident, defendant, insurance issue, and procedural setting. Do not rely on unsupported “best” or “top” labels.
Understand the working relationship
Find out who handles daily work, how decisions are communicated, whether other firms may participate, and how fees and expenses are calculated. Read the engagement agreement before signing.
